Does Moodle or Brightspace detect AI?
Short answer: not by themselves. Moodle and D2L Brightspace are learning management systems (LMS), the sites where you turn in work. Both now have their own AI features, but those help people write, summarize and build courses. They don't score your work as AI-written. Any AI check comes from a separate tool your school adds, like Turnitin or Copyleaks, and only if your school pays for it and your instructor turns it on. Here's how each one works, including discussion posts and quizzes.

The LMS vs. the detector
It helps to split this into two jobs. The LMS collects your work, holds grades, and runs quizzes and forums. A detector reads the text and estimates whether it matches known sources (plagiarism checking) or looks AI-written (AI detection). Those are different checks, and a plagiarism score is not an AI score.
Moodle and Brightspace both let schools plug outside checkers in. In Moodle that happens through plagiarism plugins or LTI External tools, which Moodle describes as "add-on apps you can integrate into your course" using the Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) standard (Moodle Docs: LTI External tools). In Brightspace, D2L lists both Turnitin and Copyleaks as add-on purchases to the core Brightspace package (D2L: About Turnitin; D2L: Copyleaks overview).
So the real question isn't "does Moodle detect AI?" It's "which tools has my school connected, and did my instructor turn them on for this activity?" If you're on Canvas or Blackboard instead, the same logic applies; see does Canvas or Blackboard detect AI?

Moodle added an AI subsystem in version 4.5. Moodle's docs describe it as the foundation for connecting AI providers such as OpenAI, Azure AI and Ollama, so users can generate text and images in the text editor and summarize or explain course content (Moodle Docs: AI tools).
The actions Moodle documents are Generate text, Generate image, Summarise text and Explain text (Moodle Docs: AI placements). None of them is an AI detector. A few details worth knowing:
- It's off until someone turns it on. Moodle says all AI placements are disabled by default and a site administrator enables them (Moodle Docs: AI placements).
- Teachers control it per course. Teachers can turn AI tools on or off for a course, then choose which tools are available in each activity (Moodle Docs: AI placements).
- If you see the AI button, that's not a green light. Whether you're allowed to use AI on an assignment is set by your course policy, not by whether the button appears.
Moodle: detection comes from plugins
Moodle's own documentation is direct: "Moodle doesn't come with any pre-installed plagiarism prevention methods - they need to be added by a site administrator" (Moodle Docs: Plagiarism prevention). An admin has to switch on plagiarism plugins in Advanced features and then install and configure one or more of them (Moodle Docs: Managing plagiarism prevention).
Moodle's docs list plugins such as Compilatio, Turnitin, Originality, Unicheck and Originality.ai as "fully supported," meaning they work with Assignments, Workshops, Forums and essay questions in quizzes. Others are listed as only supporting Assignments (Moodle Docs: Managing plagiarism prevention). Most of these are commercial tools that need a paid subscription.
The two names students ask about most:
- Turnitin. Turnitin maintains a free Moodle plugin that "requires a license for use" and works with Moodle Assignments, Discussions, Quizzes and Workshops (Moodle Marketplace: Turnitin plagiarism plugin). Turnitin connects to Moodle in more than one way (LTI 1.3, the Plagiarism or Integrity plugin, or Moodle Direct V2), and the setup your school picked changes what you see (Turnitin: Which Moodle integration type). An AI score only shows up if your school licenses Turnitin Originality (Turnitin: Why can't I see the AI writing detection report?).
- Copyleaks. Copyleaks publishes a Moodle plugin that it says detects "potential plagiarism, AI-generated content, paraphrasing, and more" (Moodle Marketplace: Copyleaks plugin). Its listing also includes accuracy and false-positive figures. Those are the vendor's own numbers, not independent tests, so we don't repeat them here.
Even when a plugin is installed, your instructor usually decides activity by activity. Turnitin's Moodle guide shows an "Enable Turnitin" box inside each activity's settings, with defaults set by the admin (Turnitin: Creating an assignment using Moodle Plagiarism Plugin).
Brightspace (D2L): Turnitin and Copyleaks through LTI
Brightspace also has its own AI suite, D2L Lumi. D2L lists Lumi Pro tools for building quizzes, generating ideas for assignments and discussions, summaries, content, study support and insights, and says an administrator has to make Generative AI available first (D2L: About D2L Lumi Pro). Like Moodle's AI subsystem, none of the Lumi Pro tools D2L lists there is described as an AI writing detector.
AI checking in Brightspace comes from add-ons:
- Turnitin. D2L says Turnitin's Similarity Report is "integrated with Assignment submissions," and that Turnitin Reports and Feedback Studio are add-on purchases (D2L: About Turnitin). Instructors turn it on per assignment under Evaluation & Feedback > Manage Turnitin, and choose whether learners can see their similarity scores (D2L: Enable Turnitin integration for an assignment). Turnitin's newer Asset Processor setup for Brightspace links each submission to "the Similarity and AI Writing report," but Turnitin adds that "AI Scores appear only if your institution has a Turnitin Originality add-on license" (Turnitin: Using D2L with Turnitin's Asset Processor).
- Copyleaks. D2L describes Copyleaks as an add-on with a built-in LTI 1.3 integration that, among other things, works to "uncover AI-generated content" (D2L: Copyleaks overview). Copyleaks announced a native integration in Brightspace Assignments available from September 30, 2025 (Copyleaks press release, Sept. 25, 2025). That's a vendor announcement. Whether your school uses it is a separate question.
Some schools on Brightspace have chosen to switch AI detection off. Vanderbilt's Brightspace team published why it disabled Turnitin's AI detector in 2023 (Vanderbilt).
Discussion posts
This is where Moodle and Brightspace differ the most, so here's what the public docs say:
- Moodle forums: Moodle lists forums among the activities "fully supported" plagiarism plugins work with, and Turnitin's plugin lists Discussions (Moodle Docs; Moodle Marketplace). So a forum post can be sent to a checker if your school set it up. Turnitin's public pages we checked don't say whether its AI writing report runs on Moodle forum posts specifically.
- Brightspace Discussions: D2L community staff have said Turnitin "is not supported within the Discussions tool" and pointed to an open feature request (D2L Community, Oct 2023; D2L Community). These are forum answers from D2L staff, not a formal product doc, so check with your school if it matters.
- Length: Turnitin's AI writing report needs at least 300 words of long-form prose, and the model doesn't reliably handle short-form writing like bullet points (Turnitin: Using the AI Writing Report). Many discussion posts are shorter than that.
That doesn't make discussion posts invisible. Your instructor reads them, and can copy one into any detector by hand. The safe assumption is that anything you post can be read and checked.
Quizzes and exams
- Moodle essay questions: Moodle's fully supported plagiarism plugins cover essay questions inside quizzes (Moodle Docs). Turnitin says that in Moodle quizzes it "works only with Essay questions (at least 20 words)" (Turnitin). Keep the 300-word AI minimum in mind: a short essay answer might get a similarity check but not enough text for an AI score. Moodle essay questions are also always marked by a teacher by hand (Moodle Docs: Essay question type), so a person reads every answer anyway.
- Brightspace quizzes: A D2L community staff member confirmed that Turnitin "can't be used in Quizzes in Brightspace" and suggested instructors use an Assignment for written answers that need checking (D2L Community). Whether Copyleaks scans Brightspace quiz answers isn't covered in the D2L pages we checked.
- Multiple choice: AI detectors read prose. Multiple choice or true/false answers aren't the kind of long-form writing Turnitin says its model is built for (Turnitin). Exam rules on those are about proctoring and honesty policies, not AI scores.
What you can and can't assume
- You can't assume nobody checks. Settings vary by school, course and activity, and instructors can always run text through a detector themselves.
- You can't assume a checker means AI detection. Many setups only check similarity. Your syllabus or the assignment page usually says which tool is in use.
- You usually won't see an AI score. Turnitin says AI writing reports are not visible to students, though instructors can download and share them (Turnitin). More in can Turnitin detect ChatGPT, Claude, and Grammarly?
- A flag isn't proof. Turnitin itself says its AI writing model "may not always be accurate" and "should not be used as the sole basis for adverse actions against a student" (Turnitin). See AI detector false positives and, if it happens to you, how to prove you didn't use AI.
- Rewording tools aren't a fix. Turnitin says its English model also looks for text modified by AI paraphrasers and bypassers (Turnitin). See do AI humanizers work?
The simplest protection is boring: read your course's AI policy, ask your instructor if it's unclear, and write in a tool with version history, like Google Docs or Word, so you can show your process. Does Moodle automatically detect AI?
No. Moodle doesn't come with a plagiarism or AI checker installed. A site administrator has to add a plugin such as Turnitin or Copyleaks, and instructors usually turn it on per activity. Moodle's own AI tools generate, summarise and explain text; they don't detect AI writing.
Does Brightspace (D2L) detect AI?
Not by itself. D2L lists Turnitin and Copyleaks as add-on purchases for Brightspace. Instructors enable them per assignment, and Turnitin shows an AI score only if the school also licenses Turnitin Originality. D2L Lumi is an AI tool for building and supporting courses, not a detector.
Are Moodle forum or Brightspace discussion posts checked for AI?
It depends on the LMS. Moodle lets fully supported plagiarism plugins, including Turnitin, work in forums if the school sets them up. D2L staff have said Turnitin isn't supported in the Brightspace Discussions tool. Turnitin's AI report also needs at least 300 words of prose, and an instructor can still paste any post into a detector by hand.
Can Turnitin check Moodle or Brightspace quiz answers?
In Moodle, Turnitin works with quiz essay questions of at least 20 words, though its AI report needs 300 words of prose. In Brightspace, D2L staff have said Turnitin can't be used in Quizzes, so instructors who want written answers checked use an Assignment instead.
Can I see my Turnitin AI score in Moodle or Brightspace?
Usually not. Turnitin says AI writing reports aren't visible to students, though instructors can download and share them. Instructors can choose to let you see the similarity report.
If Moodle's AI button is turned on in my course, can I use AI on assignments?
Not necessarily. Moodle's AI tools are switched on by administrators and teachers, but whether AI is allowed on graded work is set by your course and school policy. Check the syllabus or ask your instructor.
