Does Canvas or Blackboard detect AI?
Short answer: not by themselves. Canvas, Blackboard and Schoology are learning management systems (LMS), the websites where you turn in work. Any AI checking comes from a separate tool your school adds, like Turnitin, Copyleaks or GPTZero, and only if your school pays for it and your instructor turns it on. Here's how each one works, including what happens to discussion posts.

The LMS vs. the detector
It helps to split this into two jobs. The LMS collects your work, holds grades, and runs quizzes. A detector reads the text and estimates whether it matches known sources (plagiarism checking) or looks AI-written (AI detection). Those are different checks, and a plagiarism score is not an AI score.
Canvas, Blackboard and Schoology all let schools plug outside checkers in. Instructure, the company behind Canvas, describes its Document Processor this way: when a student submits work, Canvas notifies the outside tool, which "performs a service (like similarity detection, AI detection, translation, or accessibility checks)" and sends reports back to Canvas (Instructure). The LMS is the mailroom. The detector is whoever reads the mail.
So the real question isn't "does Canvas detect AI?" It's "which tools has my school connected, and did my instructor turn them on for this assignment?"

Canvas doesn't ship with its own AI detector. Schools that want one usually connect Turnitin. Turnitin's own guide for Canvas shows instructors adding Turnitin to an assignment with a text entry or file upload, then opening "Turnitin Similarity and AI writing (if enabled for your institution)" in SpeedGrader (Turnitin).
A few details matter:
- It's opt-in. Instructure says the Document Processor is off by default, an admin has to enable it, and instructors choose it "on a per-assignment basis" (Instructure).
- AI writing needs the right license. Turnitin says AI writing detection is only available to institutions that license Turnitin Originality (Turnitin). Some schools have also switched Turnitin's AI detector off; Vanderbilt published why it disabled it in 2023 (Vanderbilt).
- Other vendors plug in too. Copyleaks says its AI detector is available in Canvas, Blackboard, Schoology and other LMSs (Copyleaks), and GPTZero says it integrates with Canvas through a partnership with K16 Solutions (GPTZero). Those are vendor claims; whether your school uses either is a separate question.
Canvas does log some activity on its own. In Classic Quizzes, an instructor can see a quiz log with events like "Stopped viewing the Canvas quiz-taking page." The University of Illinois notes these logs "are not intended to validate academic integrity or identify cheating" (Illinois). That's an activity log, not an AI detector.
Blackboard: SafeAssign is a plagiarism checker
Blackboard's built-in tool is SafeAssign. Anthology, which makes Blackboard, says SafeAssign "compares student submissions against a set of academic papers to identify areas of overlap" (Anthology). Its Originality Report lists matching blocks of text and their sources (Anthology). That's plagiarism checking. A low SafeAssign score means the text didn't match existing sources. It doesn't mean a person wrote it, and a high score doesn't mean AI wrote it.
Anthology has said it decided "not to make AI plagiarism detection available natively within Blackboard Learn," because its research found AI detection models "biased and unreliable" (Anthology). Schools that want AI scores in Blackboard connect a separate tool, such as Turnitin or Copyleaks.
One thing students often miss: SafeAssign reports can show document properties for an uploaded file, such as author, created and modified dates, editing time and revision count, when that metadata is available (Anthology). That isn't AI detection either, but it's a reminder that a file says more than its text.
If you want to know whether SafeAssign is on, Anthology's student help says to look for "Originality Report" in the assignment's Details & Information panel. Your instructor decides whether you can see the report (Anthology).
Schoology
Schoology works the same way. PowerSchool's documentation describes a Turnitin LTI app that schools with a license can install; students submit through the Turnitin Assignment Dashboard inside the course (PowerSchool). Any AI score comes from Turnitin, and only if the school's Turnitin license includes AI writing detection. Copyleaks also lists Schoology among its LMS integrations (Copyleaks).
Discussion posts
This is where the answer gets fuzzy, so here's what the public docs say:
- Canvas: Instructure's FAQ says the Document Processor launched in Canvas Assignments only, with support for graded Discussions planned and no date set (Instructure).
- Blackboard Ultra with Turnitin: Turnitin's FAQ says its Ultra integration currently supports only the Assignment workflow, with plans to support test essay questions and discussions (Turnitin).
- SafeAssign: Anthology's help pages describe it on assignments and tests (Anthology).
- Length: Turnitin's AI writing report needs at least 300 words of prose in a long-form format like an essay, and it doesn't reliably handle short-form writing like bullet points (Turnitin). Many discussion posts are shorter than that.
That doesn't make discussion posts invisible. An instructor can copy a post into any detector by hand, and some vendors pitch wider scanning: GPTZero says its Canvas dashboard "scans and analyzes the entirety of a learning management system," not just final submissions (GPTZero). The safe assumption is that anything you post can be read and checked.
What you can and can't assume
- You can't assume nobody checks. Settings vary by school, course and assignment, and instructors can always run text through a detector themselves.
- You can't assume a checker means AI detection. Many setups only check similarity. Your syllabus or assignment page usually says which tool is in use.
- You usually won't see an AI score. Turnitin says AI writing reports are not visible to students, though instructors can download and share them (Turnitin). More in can Turnitin detect ChatGPT, Claude, and Grammarly?
- A flag isn't proof. Detectors make mistakes, especially on short or very polished writing. See AI detector false positives and, if it happens to you, how to prove you didn't use AI.
- Rewording tools aren't a fix. Turnitin says its English model also looks for text modified by AI paraphrasers and bypassers (Turnitin). See do AI humanizers work?
The simplest protection is boring: read your course's AI policy, write in a tool with version history like Google Docs or Word, and ask your instructor if a policy is unclear. Applying to college instead? Different rules apply; see do colleges check for AI in application essays?

Does Canvas automatically detect AI?
No. Canvas doesn't include its own AI detector. Schools can connect tools like Turnitin through Canvas's Document Processor, which is off by default and added by instructors per assignment. AI writing reports also require the school to license Turnitin Originality.
Does SafeAssign detect AI?
SafeAssign is a plagiarism checker. It compares submissions against existing sources and reports matching text. Anthology has said it chose not to offer AI detection natively in Blackboard Learn, so AI scores in Blackboard come from a separate tool such as Turnitin or Copyleaks.
Are Canvas or Blackboard discussion posts checked for AI?
Usually not automatically today. Instructure says Canvas's Document Processor started with Assignments, with graded Discussions planned, and Turnitin's Blackboard Ultra integration supports Assignments only for now. Turnitin's AI report also needs at least 300 words of prose. An instructor can still paste a post into a detector by hand.
Can I see my Turnitin AI score in Canvas?
Usually not. Turnitin says AI writing reports aren't visible to students, though instructors can download and share them. Instructors can choose to let you see the similarity report.
Does Schoology detect AI?
Not by itself. Schools can install Turnitin's LTI app in Schoology, and Copyleaks says its detector integrates with Schoology. Whether AI checking happens depends on your school's tools and licenses.
Can Canvas tell if I copy and paste?
Canvas Classic Quizzes keep a quiz log with events like when a student stops viewing the quiz page. That log tracks activity, not AI use, and the University of Illinois says it isn't intended to validate academic integrity or identify cheating.
