Does AI content hurt SEO?

Google does not penalize content for being AI-written. It penalizes content that is unhelpful, no matter who or what wrote it. Here is what Google actually says, where AI content typically fails, and how to use it safely.

What Google actually says

Google's guidance on AI-generated content has been consistent since early 2023: what matters is whether content is helpful, not how it was produced. Their published guidance says automation, including AI generation, is not against their guidelines as long as the content is not primarily created to manipulate search rankings. Content written to game the system, whether by a person or a model, is spam either way.

This means there is no hidden "AI detector" in Google's ranking algorithm waiting to demote your pages. What Google does have is quality systems that reward content demonstrating experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trust. AI-generated content usually fails on the first of those: experience. A model cannot have tried the product, visited the place, or done the work, and readers can tell.

Where AI content actually fails

The sites that lose traffic after publishing AI content almost always share the same problems, and none of them are about detection:

How to use AI without hurting your rankings

AI is a fine drafting tool when a human stays in charge. The workflow that works: use the model for outlines and first drafts, then add what only you can add, which is original research, real examples, tested opinions, and first-hand detail. Edit hard. Fact-check everything. Publish under a real byline attached to a real author page.

Disclose AI assistance where it matters to your readers, especially in YMYL topics like health and finance where trust is the whole product. Disclosure is not a ranking factor, but trust is, and readers who feel misled do not come back.

Bottom line

AI content does not hurt SEO. Bad content hurts SEO, and AI makes it cheap to produce bad content at scale. Use it as a starting point, add genuine value a model cannot, and Google will treat the result like anything else.
