Can Turnitin detect GPT-4?
Sometimes. Turnitin's AI detector can flag GPT-4 text, but it misses plenty of it, especially when the text is edited, paraphrased, or simply well-prompted. Here is what it catches and what slips through.

What Turnitin says
Turnitin's AI writing detection is built to identify text from large language models including GPT-4. The company describes its approach as looking for the statistical fingerprints of machine generation: the predictable word choices and uniform structure that models produce. Turnitin does not publish per-model accuracy numbers, so "can it detect GPT-4" has no official yes-or-no answer.
Where GPT-4 gets caught
Raw, unedited GPT-4 output on a standard essay prompt is the easiest case. Long, generic, five-paragraph responses with the model's default style trigger detectors reliably. If you paste a ChatGPT answer straight into a submission, Turnitin's chances are good.
Where GPT-4 slips through
The detection rate falls hard when the text is:
- Edited by a person. Even light rewriting, rearranging paragraphs, swapping synonyms, breaks up the statistical patterns detectors look for.
- Well-prompted. Asking GPT-4 to write informally, vary sentence length, or match a personal voice produces text that looks far more human to a detector.
- Paraphrased. Running AI text through a paraphraser, or having the model rewrite its own output, defeats most detectors.
- Short. Discussion posts and short answers give detectors little to work with, regardless of model.

Turnitin shows instructors an AI-writing score, not a verdict. What happens next depends entirely on your school's policy: some instructors treat it as a starting point for a conversation, others as evidence in an academic integrity case. A score alone has led to false accusations, which is why many institutions now require additional evidence before acting.
Bottom line
Turnitin can catch lazy GPT-4 use and misses careful GPT-4 use. If you are a student, the safe assumption is that raw AI output will be flagged. If you are an instructor, the safe assumption is that a low score proves nothing.
